President Kathy called the meeting to order in the Auditoria of Stanton Middle School where we convened to avoid interrupting preparations for the “Trash and Treasure” rummage sale at the Methodist Church.
 
With no piano available and David Dix assigned the Rotareminder, President Kathy dispensed with the club singing a patriotic song and a Rotary songbook song and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Paul Organ offered the invocation.  President Kathy reminded us that Bill Myers, the new Kent Fire Chief and a new member of our club, will be our speaker next Tuesday when we are back at the Methodist Church.
 
Visiting Rotarians:  There were no visiting Rotarians.
 
GuestsGeorge Joseph introduced as his guest Michele Kisthardt of Hudson Integrated Marketing whom he said is succeeding Mary Beth Harper as Communications Director for the Kent Schools, Mary Beth having retired.   Mallory Carter, the daughter of Matt Carter, the granddaughter of David Hansford, and great granddaughter of Bruce Hansford was introduced.

Next Rotary Happy Hour:   scheduled for September 22nd at the River Merchant.
 
Rotary Shirts: President Kathy announced Rotary t-shits and polo shirts were available to inspect on a table near where Matt Carter took our luncheon money and Bruce Hansford recorded our attendance.  Prices, she said, will be listed next week.
 
Food DriveTodd Kamenash reminded us that Wednesday, August 25th from 1 to 4 there was a food drop-off site on Hilltop Drive in front of Cartwright Hall.
 
100th Anniversary, Rotary Moment:  Jim Myers talked about Kent Rotary in 1947.  See his remarks. 
 
Program:  Introduction of new teachers in the Kent Schools.
 
Assistant Superintendent of Kent City Schools Tom Larkin introduced 14 new teachers who are joining the faculty and staff.  They are Sadie Anderson Ela (Bachelor of Science at Ohio University) at Stanton Middle School; Katy Bissell (Master’s Degree from City College of New York) at Longcoy Elementary School; Erin Bugarcic (MLIS/Med Kent State University) in Library Media for Davey and Walls Elementary Schools; Michelle Dile (Bachelor of Science at the University of Akron), Wall Elementary School, Grade 4; Emma Hanby (Master’s of Education at Kent State University), Walls Elementary School, Grade 4; Kimberly Kimble (Bachelor of Science University of Akron), Stanton Middle School, Intervention Specialist; Shelley Loofboro, (Bachelor of Science, Kent State University), Davey Elementary School, Grade 4; Beth Mast (Bachelor of Science, Bowling Green University), Roosevelt  High School, Mathematics; Beth Nahra (Master’s of Education from Grand Canyon University), Roosevelt High School, Career Technical Clinical/Allied Health Care;  Ellen Penglase (Master’s Degree from California State University), Intervention Specialist, Stanton Middle School; Kaitlyn Schwab, (Bachelor of Science, Kent State University), Davey Elementary School, Kindergarten; Jennifer Silman, (Bachelor of Science, Kent State University), Davey Elementary School, Grade 3; Carrie Sullivan (Bachelor of Science, University of Akron), Holden Elementary School, Intervention Specialist; Elizabeth Weckerly, Bachelor of Science, Kent State University), Roosevelt High School, Intervention Specialist; Coreena Wise (Bachelor of Science, Bowling Green University), Intervention Specialist, 50 percent of the time.  Responding was Will Underwood, retired from Kent State University Publishing, who has become a school bus driver for the Kent City Schools. 
 
New Turf Surface:  Following the introduction of teachers, George Joseph made himself available to give walking tours of the new surface that replaces grass at the Roosevelt High School stadium.  The deep green of the field has end zones that are Roosevelt Red with one saying “Rough Riders” and the other “Roosevelt”.
