Hale Thompson returned from the 1943 St. Louis Rotary International Convention and stated that the meeting was one of seriousness, the theme being “Rotary Serving in War and In Peace”. He referred to the fact that many of the addresses centered over the sixth object of Rotary, international understanding and goodwill.Our club met at several places during the year 1942-1943. In the summer of 1942 the sessions were held at the Twin Lakes Country Club and for the first meeting of October they return to Hotel Kent. They continued at the hotel until April when a few meetings were held at the Robin Hood. 79 years ago today, on May 11, 1942, to the end of the year the meetings were held at the Methodist Church Social Room, with the ladies at the church serving the luncheon.
In June 1943, the discussion relative to the establishment of a youth center culminated in the selection of the site and the initial financing of the “Jay-Teen”, a junior canteen for the entertainment of the youth of the city. President Fred Fuller, was an active leader in the organization of this project, which was later turned over to the Junior Chamber of Commerce. For those who weren’t acquainted with the Jay-Teen, it was located above what is now the Huntington National Bank, downtown. It was a youth social club with recreation and a dance floor.
