In the fall of 1987, I moved into Prentice Hall at Kent State University. I remember telling people which dorm I was in and often I would be met with "sadness or shock" on their faces. At first, I had no idea why, but I assumed it had something to do with the shooting. Soon after moving into the dorm, I was walking across the parking lot when I overheard students talking about "This is where it happened." No one told me what IT was...history told me. I knew immediately.
Last week, many of you joined me at the May 4 Visitors Center to learn more about this tragic day. Immersed in the timeline and those who had stories to tell, I personally felt a stronger connection to the day that would forever be commemorated in song and whisper. I am grateful to Alison Caplan for her time, her spirit and all that she shared. I am also grateful to the Rotarians who spoke to me as we walked through the museum, telling me about where they were on that date and how it impacted their lives. I am so thankful we had the opportunity to learn more about these events through an off-site meeting and encourage all Rotarians to join us when we visit more places in the future. We have an incredible community with a rich history and many stories to tell. Some stories are sad, some are not...however, every story hits closer to your heart when you see it from an up-close perspective.
