Another reminder of our 100 year history.

Last week I pointed out that during the Depression, Kent Rotarians decided to establish a garden plot where the unemployed could raise vegetables for their own use. It was known as the Community Garden.  To start the enterprise 10 acres of ground were secured on the Longcoy Farm on the west side of town. Kent State College students did the surveying for the garden layout. Seeds and fertilizer were purchased with money from the Special Fund. Throughout the summer unemployed men worked with diligence and a considerable rivalry. The harvest from the plot furnished food for many a table that otherwise would’ve been bare had it not been for the establishment by Rotarians of the self-help project for the city’s unemployed.

Late in 1931, Dentist George Dumm brought a new project to Kent Rotarians. Due to the prevailing economic conditions there were several deserving students in Kent State College who needed financial assistance and suggested that Kent Rotary Club create a student loan fund. It was named the “Rose Green Memorial Fund” in memory of her years as Principal of both South and DePeyster Schools.
