Another reminder of our 100 year history.
The last few weeks of outstanding speakers reminded us of acquaintances our members have through friendships gained, some-while in schools, Prep or College. Such was the case when our club hosted a meeting in 1929 when our guests included the Kiwanis Club and the Chamber Of Commerce, 180 in all, to hear John Vorys a Yale classmate of Paul Davey Sr.
John Vorys was here to discuss aviation and furnish airplane rides at Stow air field to those who would “dare to take a chance”.
U.S. Naval Aviation has its beginning with a small group of undergraduates at Yale University formed as a Naval Reserve Unit of which John Vorys was a member. From Lancaster, Ohio, he later served the Ohio House Of Representatives as well as the Ohio Senate.
He became the director of aviation for Ohio and served nine terms in Congress, a delegate to the United Nations and as Regent of the Smithsonian Institution.
Perhaps, as David Myers has suggested, there may be yet more friendships of Kent Rotarians we might seek out for our Zoom programs.
History sometimes repeats itself.
