You may recall that prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941  a committee had been named on national defense. Our district governor had commended President Crecraft most favorably for naming a committee on national defense stating that it was the first club he visited that had the foresight to place in its organization a committee to meet the anticipated emergency.

In February of 1942, at one of our regular meetings, our speaker was German born Dr. Shirer who had been a leader of the youth movement in Germany after World War I and who had left Germany to become a subject of the British government when Hitler rose to power. He spoke on the Youth Movement , what it means, and what we should do for the peace time  to follow World War II.

Later in April of 1942 the program was devoted to the subject of training for defense, at which time the speaker explained the arrangements made at Kent State University under the V-1 program of the government, and Lieutenant Edward Adams of Kent, described his training at Annapolis and the training of recruits for the Navy at various camps throughout the country.

Rotarians to join the service in the armed forces of the United States that year were Harry S. Longcoy,  Wayne Baumberger, and Bill Taylor of Kent State University, for whom  Taylor Hall is named.

More to follow on the war next week.
