President’s ramblings for week of December 15

President’s ramblings for week of December 15

story image preview
Our outstanding program chairman, Dave Myers, came through with another unforgettable program this week when the Roosevelt High School Choral program was cancelled. His “Year in Review” for 1920 is well worth watching on our Rotary You Tube channel if you missed it. January’s programs arranged by Amanda Senn will feature
“locals who have become famous”, with Marcquis Parham, our next program, on January 5.
I’ll take this opportunity to remind everyone as we close out this calendar year that in order to be eligible for a District matching grant next year, we must contribute at least $40 per capita to the Rotary International annual fund. Fortunately, we have till the end of June to make this goal but I mention it now for individual tax planning purposes. With our recent Holiday Gala raising over $3000, we are well on our way to reaching that goal.

The Glenn Saltzman Award Winners 2020

The following is excerpted from Carol Crimi's award speech presenting the Glenn Saltzman Award For 2020:

Glenn-Saltzman-Obituary
Dr. Glenn Alan Saltzman was a member of the Rotary Club of Kent for many years serving as Club President during the 1980-1981 Rotary Year.  As a husband, father, grandfather, Navy Captain, educator and Kent community leader, Glenn was known as a man of conscience and humor who touched the lives of everyone with whom he came into contact.  Dr. Saltzman tirelessly donated his time and expertise to multiple local area organizations and causes during the many years he lived in the Kent community.  It was through his vision that the seeds of the Kent Rotary Foundation were planted, and it was through this Foundation, using proceeds raised by the Kent Rotary Club and other private donations, that many local and area organizations have been financially helped.  Dr. Saltzman’s legacy is celebrated today with this award, given each year, to the individual who exhibits those traits that were endeared in the man himself; integrity,  compassion,  vision and pride in professional accomplishment.

Award Recipients for 2020:

Todd Kamenash,  and Alyssa Robinson, on behalf of the Kent Rotary Foundation Board of Directors, I am honored to present you with the Glenn Saltzman Award for 2020 tonight.  We have only one question:  We are all wondering what you do the two of you do with all your spare time???
In addition to a certificate of Award for both of you, as a means of further honoring you both, the Foundation Board has pledged to donate the sum of $500.00 to the charity of your choice.

Speaker
David Myers presented today’s program which came about due to research he began during quarantine on his great grandfather, Paul Davey. Dave spent time reading The Kent Tribune newspaper as part of his research. He adapted that research for today’s program in which he shared popular, and often comical, headlines and more from every month of 1920 as written by the Kent Tribune. The Kent Tribune is available online thanks to a grant received by Kent Historical Society. Those interested in reading the paper on their own can find it at: https://kentohiohistory.org/collections/newspaper-archives-kent-tribune. David closed his presentation with a reading of the poem Little Old Newspaper from My Old Hometown.

History Moment Jan 5, 2021
John Gettrust was our President during 1934-35. Our club’s membership had dropped to 50 members, still the result of the Great Depression.

Major Roy Smith through his efforts as Vice President of the Lamson & Sessions Company, donated to the city of Kent, a track of land along the Cuyahoga River for a municipal park system. A committee of Rotarians was name to aid the city in developing and beautifying the park project on the land recently donated.
Major Smith was the first member of our club to be named a board trustee of Kent State University, an honor bestowed by Governor Davey.

We moved our meeting place from the Robin Hood Restaurant  to the hotel, which had change its name from the Franklin Hotel to Hotel Kent.

Kent Rotary lost one postmaster from its membership and gained a new one when Leo Bietz was commissioned on May 1, 1935. He succeeded W. W. Reed whose term of service had expired.  In later years, Merle Andregg, also a Kent Rotarian, was name Kent Postmaster.

More moments from our history,

Jim Myers
