President’s ramblings for week of October 20
We finish up our month with a program on Meads, not something one partakes often. It’s been a fun and informative month as we have explored a variety of liquid libations. Next month we kick of with our own Doug Fuller and Tom Hatch talking about Kent building facades.

We welcome Kelly Tremaine as our newest member. I would remind you again to submit your nomination for Rotarian of the Year which will be announced at our online Holiday gala. You can find a list of previous winners online. Please email your nominee and a brief reason for nominating.

100th Anniversary Moment
Jim Myers shared a story, which included Duncan and Daisy Wolcott, about a program offered during the 1929-1930 Rotary year.

Speaker
Curt Stumpf introduced Josh Daily and Amy Mesh, from Middle West Spirits in Columbus, OH.
Josh and Amy detailed the history of the distillery, noting that Josh joined the business in 2010 and Amy in 2017. Middle West was founded in 2008 with three employees. They opened for commercial production in 2010. In 2010, they were only the 56th micro-distillery in the nation. Today, there are over 2,500. In Columbus alone there are now six or seven distilleries. Middle West employs fifty people today.

Today, their spirits can be found throughout Ohio and in seven other states. Locally, one can find their products in Giant Eagle. One can also purchase directly from their website: shop.middlewestspirits.com. In 2021, they hope to expand further. The distillery produces whiskey and dark goods under the Middle West brand and vodka and clear goods under the OYO brand. They pride themselves on using locally sourced products as much as possible to create artisan spirits honoring Ohio. The majority of the wheat they use is grown in Fostoria, OH and Josh noted that their spirits taste like the agriculture and environment from which they come. Middle West operates in their main location off High Street in Columbus as well as two additional warehouses. Currently, whiskey is their most produced item. Josh invited Rotarians to take a trip to Columbus for a group tour when the COVID threat is no longer present and the distillery is able to provide tours again.

During the initial COVID-19 health emergency, Middle West pivoted their production to make hand sanitizer. In late March and early April 2020 they produced and donated 75,000 bottles of sanitizer to local EMS and other providers. Hand sanitizer is for sale on their website.

Josh and Amy took time to detail the production process of several spirits, sharing the proof, ingredients, and processes for whiskey, bourbon, and vodka. Interestingly, they also reuse the bourbon barrels to produce a maple syrup. Samples provided to several Rotarians included Middle West Spirits Straight Bourbon, Michelone Reserve and OYO Stone Fruit Vodka.

Rotary History Moment Oct 20, 2020

Another reminder of our 100 year history.  Today’s history moment involves our city, club and my family.

Mentioned earlier this year was the fact that our club president, John Salter, who was the Supt. of the Lamson and Sessions Company, was my wife Sally’s grandfather, and was President of our club 1929 to 1930. During his presidency a program had been scheduled by one of our founding members, Duncan Wolcott, also my wife Sally’s other grandfather, about the Glider Club formed at Theodore Roosevelt High School. Fate intervened as Duncan suffered a heart attack and died a day or so later.

In a tribute to Duncan, written by our club’s founder, Tubby Walls, Kent Schools Superintendent, He pointed to the fact that Duncan, who had been Portage County’s Prosecuting Attorney and a gifted orator had presented the case for Kent State Normal College being located in Kent,

Before the Ohio Legislature, and because of his service as a Kent School Board President , and a staunch Republican,  supervised the construction and promoted the naming of our high school in honor of Theodore Roosevelt.
Another member of our club who made “Service Above Self” his motto!

As a footnote, Duncan s widow Daisy Wolcott, opened her Lilac Gardens on West Main Street to provide some income while raising her 4 fatherless sons.
