Visiting Rotarians and Guests: There were no visiting Rotarians today. Mary Beth Harper introduced Yeonmin Kim as her guest. He is a former Rotary scholar. Announcements: Amanda Senn told us that the Happy Hour has been changed to Wednesday, May 31st from 4 to 6 pm. It will be held at the Battleground. The date was moved to avoid conflicts with other Rotary functions. This is expected to draw a large crowd, so please let Amanda know if you plan to attend. Larry Lohman needs volunteers to help with Grill For Good on June 10th. He needs help planning the grill menu and then people to help on the day of the event. Carol Crimi presented a check for $2,000 to the Kent Historical Society for an upcoming project. Doug Fuller accepted the check on behalf of the Historical Society. He suggested that the Historic Story Maps project could be described in more detail as a future program for Rotary. Doug Fuller announced another Tap Talks program to be held next Tuesday at North Water Street Brewing. The talk will feature the work done by the Kent Environmental Council to develop the river walkway through downtown Kent. President Dave thanked the auction crew for all their work on making our fundraiser a big success. Special kudos to Stacy Richardson and Lauren Talion, plus thanks to Todd Kamenash, Amanda Senn, Randy Smith, Jennifer Lennox, Nithya Venkataraman. Program: President Dave asked Mary Beth Harper to introduce our program for today. Mary Beth said she was pleased to have us meet the author of a leadership memoir written by someone many of us know, Linda Robertson. Linda had a career as a school administrator and later received a Ph.D. from KSU. She then served as the Director of the Gerald Read Center for International and Intercultural Education for 20 years. Linda would visit Rotary when she would accompany ILEP scholars to our Rotary luncheons. After Linda retired in 2020, she began writing a book about her experiences growing up in Wyoming. Her book is provocatively titled Bullsh*t with Cream on It. Mary Beth asked questions of Linda to help us understand the lessons learned by Linda while growing up on a remote sheep ranch. Linda told us that her leadership training began at an early age. Her parents influenced her love of learning and desire to teach others. Linda structured her book by using Will Rogers quotes and made them leadership musts. Then at the end of each chapter she posed questions designed to encourage reflection about life experiences. Linda urged us to make the book a group project and talk with others, including family about our own pivotal experiences. Linda shared information about her time in a one-room school, life in a water-drought and remote part of Wyoming, and the lessons from childhood that left an indelible mark on her career. She said a theme of the book is that you take whatever is given to you and deal with it by yourself. Response: Will Underwood thanked Linda for presenting the program today. He congratulated her on her book’s publication. He liked the approach to the book with opening quotes and questions for reflection. The meeting ended with the Four-Way Test.
