A note from President Dave
Dear Rotarians,

I really enjoyed the physics lesson we were given last week by Dr. Jon Secaur. I love the variety of different programs and topics we are treated to every week at our meetings! Thanks once again to Program chair Rachel Kerns and monthly chair Jen Lennox!

We had a great time at the Kent State men’s basketball game on Friday night! Thanks to all who joined in the fun and were treated to an impressive showing by the Flashes. Better yet, we raised some money for our foundation so it was a success all around! Speaking of supporting our foundation make sure you save the date for our annual auction on May 5th! More to come but save that date!!

Over the course of the next few weeks we will be passing the hat at our Tuesday meetings to raise money to support relief efforts following the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Our goal is going to be raising enough for at least one shelter box ($1,000) that provides critical supplies and shelter for people who’ve been thrust into extremely difficult situations. Every little bit can make a difference and our Club has always been supportive of important humanitarian efforts such as this. Please consider throwing something into the hat (or Venmo) as we do our part.

Have a great week and see you Tuesday!

Yours in Service,

Dave

President David Myers opened the meeting. Club members sang the National Anthem and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Roberta O'Keefe gave the invocation. David Dix played two songs for the Club to sing, That's Amore for Valentine's Day and the KSU Fight Song for the men's basketball game club members will watch this Friday.

There were no visiting Rotarians. President Dave welcomed Bruce Hansford back to the meeting. Guests were Ben Tipton and speaker Jon Secaur's wife Linda.

Announcements: Past District Governor Larry Lohman announced the District Conference is April 28 & 29 at the Marriot East located at I-271 & Harvard Rd.

Will Underwood asked for a hand for all the Rotareminder authors.

Todd Kamenesh is seeking volunteers to help with the March Madness literacy fund raiser.

President Dave has tickets available for this Friday's basketball game. He announced that the Club's Board of Directors would meet via Zoom Thursday at 7 p.m. He also thanked Asad, Rachel and Amanda for attending the District Grant Conference.

Happy Bucks: Laing Kennedy gave a preview of Friday's game against Eastern Michigan; Paul Organ has purchased a building for his business using Kent connections; Kathy Myers gave for Valentine's Day; Bill Childers for being trivia champs after the Rotary Happy Hour last week; Anne Moneypenny thanked the Club for the basket Rotary donated, and Bill Nome for his anniversary last week.

Birthdays: Jeff Roeger had the Rotarians with birthdays in February tell their first concert and favorite concert. Answers of special note were Steve Belli's seeing Aerosmith at YSU with only about 4,000 people in attendance and Rachel Oldham's taking her daughters to see Elton John, who they knew from watching Sesame Street. Free lunch was won by Paul Organ.

Speaker: Jenn Lennox, February program chair, introduced Dr. Jon Secaur to speak on Light, When We Need It. Dr. Secaur has retired after teaching physics for 50 years, mostly at Kent Roosevelt High School and Kent State University. His favorite course was "7 Ideas That Shook The Universe." He and his wife Linda have five children between them and eight grandchildren.

Dr. Secaur planted seven questions about light in the audience which he had Rotarians read and he answered.
What is light? A phenomenon of a disturbance in the electron magnetic fields.
What is color? Color is entirely in our brains. It is the frequency of light leftovers.
What did Einstein and Yoda have to say about light? e=mc2 and "Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter."
How long does light last? As far as we know, forever.
Does light have memory? Yes. We are one universe.
Do we know how fast light travels? No. It's so fast that we can't grasp it.
Who discovered what light is? James Clark Maxwell in 1873.

Adam Alderson, former student of Dr. Secaur, gave the response.

The meeting ended with the reciting of the 4-way test.
