Happy April!
Once April arrives and we get that one inevitable last bit of snow (we hope, anyway) we know spring and warmer weather are really on their way.  It’s always nice to put away those heavy coats until next year.

Thanks, Todd Kamenash for a great month of programs in March.  He certainly kept us entertained.  I’m looking forward to hearing who among our club members won the Women’s and Men’s March Madness bracket contest.  I was out as soon as it started, so it’s been fun to hear who is still in the running.

David Dix has a great month of programs lined up for April.  They are listed in the panel on the right of this Rotaryminder, so check them out and be sure to invite guests and potential Rotarians to join us!

This upcoming Saturday is the District 4-Way Speech Contest hosted by our club.  Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help and especially to Will Underwood, Rachel Kerns and Shawn Gordon for all the extra work they have done to get this important event so well organized!

It’s time to register for the District Conference.  Go to our District 6630 website (www.rotarydistrict6630.org) and you’ll find information on the conference and you can register for some or all of the conference.  A number of you signed up to let me know you were interested in attending the Saturday night dinner.  If you haven’t signed up yet, PLEASE consider joining us for dinner on Saturday evening, April 23rd.  In addition to its being our very own Governor Larry’s final conference evening, our club will be hosting a hospitality suite after dinner.

REMEMBER!  It’s also time to let the 2022 Auction Committee know what you’ll be donating at this year’s Rotary Auction.  The auction will be held on Friday, May 6, 2022.  More information will be coming, or you can reach out to Stacey Richardson (stacey.richardson@kentfreelibrary.org) or Lauren Talion (lauren.talion.un76@statefarm.com) with your questions or auction items.  We need lots of sponsors, too.  Please consider sponsoring the auction.  Dave Sommers is handling sponsorships.  He can be reached at dsommers@dsarchitecture.com.

Are you and/or your business a sponsor on the Rotary Club of Kent’s website and emails?  If so, it’s time to let Matt Carter know that you’re sponsoring again this year.  OR, if you are not currently a sponsor and would like to be (only $250/year), please reach out to Matt Carter (mcarter@ht.bank) and/or Roger Kramer (rogerkramer@gmail.com).

As I mentioned last week, we are all concerned about the situation in the Ukraine.  There is information about what Rotary International is doing in providing aid in the region on our District 6630 website (www.rotarydistrict6630.org).  Our sister club in Aurora is raising money and has a generous member who will match funds up to $5000.  If you are interested in donating, I suggest you send your money to them.  They will be working through RI, but your dollars will go further with that match.  Here’s an excerpt from an email from their club president, Ron Echelberry.

Many members have asked about giving to the Rotary Disaster Relief Fund to aid the displaced people of the Ukraine.  This is a legitimate relief fund whose sole purpose is to aid the refugees leaving the country of Ukraine through Rotary Clubs in Europe.  It is not for arms and ammunition/.
A club member has graciously agreed to match any contribution up to $5000.  Any monies collected will go specifically to this Relief Fund.
All donations are to be mailed to Rotary Club Of Aurora Foundation, PO Box 795 Aurora, Ohio 44202 by April 20.  Local funds will then be lumped together and then sent to Rotary International Disaster Relief Fund.  Any donation is tax deductible.  Please make checks out to Rotary Club of aurora Foundation with a notation Relief Fund on the memo.
Donors do not have to be Rotarians, so feel free to send this notice to friends and neighbors.
Let us help some unfortunate people that are in dire need.  Thank you in advance.  Ron Echelberry, President, Rotary club of Aurora.

President-Elect Dave will be running Tuesday’s meeting as I am in California visiting my mother.  I will be attending the meeting virtually.

With gratitude,

Kathy

Rotareminder for March 29, 2022
President Kathy called the meeting to order at 12:15. Our patriotic song was America, the Beautiful lead by David Dix, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the invocation by Paul Organ.

Visitors: We welcomed visiting Rotarians, Steve Bossart from the Akron Club and Rich Cole from Port Summit. Steve is VP Resource Development at Coleman Health Services and Rich is Assistant Area Governor of District 6630 for Portage County clubs.

Jeff Roeger’s guest was Cooper Moore, recent graduate of Kent State’s architecture program and newly-named director of the American Institute of Architecture Students. Dave Sommers guests were Jeff Meyers, former Kent Rotarian and president of DS Architecture and Luke Kraft, director of the Education Studio at DS Architecture. Matt Carter introduced his daughter, Mallory.

Announcements:
  • President Kathy announced a meeting of the Auction Committee following today’s meeting and reminded everyone to sign up to attend the District Conference dinner in support of Larry Lohman’s contributions as this year’s District Governor.
  • Todd Kamenash filled us in on the status of March Madness reminding us of Laing Kennedy’s prediction that chaos would reign. Laing was, of course, correct.
  • Rachel Kerns asked those who signed up to be a judge at next week’s District 4-Way Speech Contest to contact her.
  • Bill Myers noted that the West Side Firehouse renovation is complete and invited everyone to an open house reception on May 7 from 9 to Noon.

Happy Bucks contributors included David Dix, Lee Higgins, Todd Kamenash, Roberta O’Keefe, Kathy Myers, and Laing Kennedy, who apologized for leading people down the path of disaster with last week’s March Madness recommendations.

Today’s Program: Jay Graham, University Architect
Todd Kamenash introduced Jay Graham, Executive Director of the Office of the University Architect and University Architect who discussed the status of renovation and new construction on campus. He also outlined changes to the Gateway Facilities Master Plan prompted by the pandemic. Of the projects approved by the trustees in 2018, three are completed and the others are well on their way to completion. The planned 1100 car parking garage has been scrapped in favor of less costly options and the allocated money has been rerouted to handle the spike in costs resulting from the pandemic.

Mr. Graham discussed three projects in detail:  The addition to the Aeronautics and Engineering facility on Summit Street, the new Ambassador Crawford Business and Entrepreneurship building on East Main Street, and the Ice Arena and Band practice facility.
  • The Aerospace and Engineering building will feature an airfoil roof above an atrium with adjacent classrooms providing space for student collaboration as well as large meetings and events. DSArchitecture is working on this project.
  • The Ice Arena and Band practice facility will become a first-class home for our expanding marching band program. President Diacon has offered band students a $1000 scholarship to spur growth of the program from 150 to 250 students.
  • The new Crawford Hall will feature classrooms designed around remote synchronous delivery of instruction so that students both present and joining remotely will be able to fully participate in the classroom experience.
Mr. Graham also discussed the Terrace Hall demolition and the work currently underway at White Hall to redesign the front facing campus along East Main Street creating walkways and green space.

Today’s Response: Tom Hatch thanked Mr. Graham for his presentation noting that the projects ongoing at the University will greatly enhance our town and improve the student experience in a post-pandemic world at Kent State.

Respectfully submitted
Thomas Hatch
