- Bill Myers noted that the West Side Firehouse renovation is complete and invited everyone to an open house reception on May 7 from 9 to Noon.
Happy Bucks contributors included David Dix, Lee Higgins, Todd Kamenash, Roberta O’Keefe, Kathy Myers, and Laing Kennedy, who apologized for leading people down the path of disaster with last week’s March Madness recommendations. Today’s Program: Jay Graham, University Architect Todd Kamenash introduced Jay Graham, Executive Director of the Office of the University Architect and University Architect who discussed the status of renovation and new construction on campus. He also outlined changes to the Gateway Facilities Master Plan prompted by the pandemic. Of the projects approved by the trustees in 2018, three are completed and the others are well on their way to completion. The planned 1100 car parking garage has been scrapped in favor of less costly options and the allocated money has been rerouted to handle the spike in costs resulting from the pandemic. Mr. Graham discussed three projects in detail: The addition to the Aeronautics and Engineering facility on Summit Street, the new Ambassador Crawford Business and Entrepreneurship building on East Main Street, and the Ice Arena and Band practice facility. - The Aerospace and Engineering building will feature an airfoil roof above an atrium with adjacent classrooms providing space for student collaboration as well as large meetings and events. DSArchitecture is working on this project.
- The Ice Arena and Band practice facility will become a first-class home for our expanding marching band program. President Diacon has offered band students a $1000 scholarship to spur growth of the program from 150 to 250 students.
- The new Crawford Hall will feature classrooms designed around remote synchronous delivery of instruction so that students both present and joining remotely will be able to fully participate in the classroom experience.
Mr. Graham also discussed the Terrace Hall demolition and the work currently underway at White Hall to redesign the front facing campus along East Main Street creating walkways and green space. Today’s Response: Tom Hatch thanked Mr. Graham for his presentation noting that the projects ongoing at the University will greatly enhance our town and improve the student experience in a post-pandemic world at Kent State. Respectfully submitted Thomas Hatch
