Vice President Amanda called the meeting to order and thanked audio booth volunteers Mark Pennell and Roger Kramer. We sang The Star-Spangled Banner, played by David Dix. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, Amanda Senn offered the invocation. Our second song was There’s No Business like Show Business led by Dom Bollenbacher, with David Dix on piano.

Dennis Love introduced Abby Gold. Parents Phil and Skip attended. Dennis spoke about how Abby is dependable, fair, kind and has empathy for others. She has advanced courses, in the marketing program and has a 3.8 GPA. She’s a wonderful person. She wants to go to KSU for Criminal Justice.

 

 

 

Amanda Senn presented Sandee Reid with the Paul Harris Fellow Award, which is a Rotary International honor that recognizes individuals who contribute or have had contributions made in their name to the Rotary Foundation. Congratulations Sandee Reid!

 

 

Jennifer Lennox introduced Dan Joy, Davey Tree Expert Company who will be providing an update on the Davey SEED Campus. He has received several awards through Davey Tree. Son of Jack and Elsie Joy, grew up in Kent and graduated from Kent Roosevelt High School.

 

Dan spoke about the SEED Campus, which has taken approximately 2 years to get up and running. The SEED Campus started as Oak Knolls, in 2018 they worked with their architects and planners to come up with the master plan. They were able to get this project done on time. The campus will be done this spring, the arboretum won’t be available to the public until the road project is done and there is parking. There is a network of arboretums across the world, they are aiming to be one of the highest rated one. There are only 45 in the entire world that has that accreditation, one will be here in Ohio. They will have over 36,000 plants in the arboretum.

 

There is a barn, which was taken down from the Golf Course piece by piece. The timbers were harvested in 1890, white oak. They have reassembled the barn as an event space. They were aiming for history, community, training and education, research, labs and host national events. Throughout the buildings there are classrooms, video studio, photo studios, offices, indoor climbing training center, labs, etc. The lumber used was from the trees taken down for the facility. There will be archives and it will be a Davey Tree Museum. They have a 3 hole, Par 3 golf course on the grounds, which will be ready for play in July (not for the public).

 

The SEED Campus is sustainability-focused. They’re working towards a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. They have over 2 acres of solar panels, 650-kilowatt photovoltaic solar array, making the property a net-zero carbon emission campus using all electricity. There is a stormwater retention pond paired with two backup water wells to keep constant water levels and to eliminate impact on city stormwater levels.
