President’s ramblings for week of January 19
We heard from a local entrepreneur Mason Kisamore who, along with his wife, runs a farming operation in Portage County. It is obvious that small farms are alive and well in our community. The entrepreneurial skill they display is impressive both in scope and planning. This week Liz Sidoti, Managing Director Abernathy MacGregor, will be our speaker. The daughter of Past President Roger and a Kent Theodore Roosevelt Grad, she will undoubtedly bring us a program with national political insight.
It’s been “a dry spell” as far as hands on Rotary service projects during this current pandemic. We will soon have 2 projects to serve our community. The first spearheaded by Curtis Stumpf will be a major boost to our long-standing literacy efforts. The Imagination Library, in conjunction with Stacy Richardson of the Kent Free Library and Bill Childers of Portage County United Way, will provide a book per month for every child in the county from birth to 5 years of age. Our club has received a matching grant from our District for a total of $5,000 and we will need volunteers to register recipients.

Project number 2 is planning our annual Auction Fund Raiser which raises the bulk of funds that our Foundation distributes each year. The approximately $30,000 we raised last year has been carefully allocated to several worthy causes already. Your help is needed immediately on a planning committee and all of us should be considering what donation we will contribute to the Auction. Let’s end “our hibernation” early and get on board one of these opportunities to put “Service above Self”.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Kent Rotary Members- we need your help!

Kent Rotary has an active grant project entitled, "Imagination Library at the Kent Free Library". This grant assists with delivering free books every month to children ages 0-5 years old in Portage County. We are looking for volunteers to help with outreach and ideas to help recruit parents with young children to enroll in the program.

The first informational meeting is this coming Tuesday evening, January 26th at 7:00 pm.

New members, we always hear that you are looking for ways to get involved---- well, here's your chance!

Zoom info for the meeting is listed below. Please attend and find out if this is something you would like to be involved in.
Best regards,
Curt Stumpf

President Randy announced that the Rotary Executive Board will meet this week as well as the capital committee of the Foundation.

Rotary Student of the Month:
Dennis Love introduced the January student of the month for Roosevelt High School.  Patrick Gallagher, a senior, is described as an amazing student, who carries a 4.3 GPA.  He is involved in an aerophysics program at Stow High School.  He also takes advanced and AP classes.  He is described as charismatic and positive and a good leader.  In sports, he has played tennis all four years.  He is also involved in leadership activities and student council.  He participates in music and drama at the high school.  Future plans involve college, perhaps at Ohio State University.

100th Anniversary Moment:
Jim Myers reported on Rotary activities in the late 1930’s as the country was coming out of the great depression.  Rotary sponsored a recreation program for youth that was funded by a WPA grant.  Rotarians also made personal and monetary contributions to the project that included recreation and educational programs.  In 1938 there were 30 supervisors and instructors employed to run the program.

Program:
Amanda Senn introduced Mason Kisamore, who frequents the Kent Farmer’s Market.  Amanda noted that Mason met his wife Stacy at the Randolf Fair.  Mason, his wife along with sons Harlan and Emerson raise animals, supplying meat for Dumas and the Farmer’s Market.
Mason told us that he has been involved with farming his entire life.  He started helping on his dad’s farm and now he has his own farm business.  He owns over 20 acres of land and leases an additional 600 acres of land, to grow crops and raise animals.  They raise cattle, lambs, pigs, turkeys, chickens, laying hens and milk cows.  They sell pork, lamb, beef to customers at Dumas Meats and the Kent Farmer’s Market.  They also sell fresh turkeys and eggs.

Mason talked about his wife’s egg selling business.  She started with 20 chickens and is now up to 500 chickens.  They sell about 250 dozen egg per week.

The crops that are grown on the farm include corn, soybeans, and hay.  The corn and hay are used for feed and the soybeans for cash.
Mason talked about some of the difficulties with being in farming.  He noted that it can be difficult to get animals processed.  There can be long waiting times for available processing.  He hopes that problem will level off fairly soon.  Financing can also be an issue. He uses lines of credit during the months when he is not receiving income.  Farm equipment is also very expensive to buy.
Future goals for the farm include building a storage facility for grain storage.  In addition, Mason would like to retire the debt on the current property and buy more land for farming.
There were numerous questions asked of Mason about his extensive farm operation.

Response:
Dave Myers thanked Mason for his presentation. He admitted he likes going to the Kent Farmer’s Market and to Dumas for meat.  He was impressed by Mason’s farm operation.  This was a very interesting program for us today.  And President Randy noted that Mason is a true Renaissance man!

Respectfully submitted,
Sue Hetrick

Kent Rotary History Moment for Jan 19th, 2021
The City of Kent in line with the rest of the country was slowly working its way out of the economic depression at this time; yet work was needed for those who were unable to secure a regular employment. To create worthwhile jobs for some of the worthy unemployed and, at the same time to afford recreation for underprivileged children in the city, vice president Ernst Ferry suggested that the Rotary Club sponsor a recreational program for the children and youth of Kent and use the idle men of the city to develop facilities for the promotion of the project. This was a citywide undertaking with several civic organizations joining with the City of Kent to promote the plan.

A Recreational Commission was appointed and Rotary, together with city officials, used its influence to secure a WPA grant in the amount of $16,000 which was used to pay the salary of a full-time director of recreation, and to secure the necessary labor to develop playgrounds and build and erect the required equipment. This project grew to be not only recreational but also educational. There was organized play, physical training, softball, baseball, tennis, basketball, with teams formed for men and women as well as for boys and girls. Classes were establishing in nature study, in handicraft, and in construction of toys. In 1938 there were 30 supervisors and instructors employed.

Ernie Ferry  was appointed a member of the recreation committee on which he served a four year term.

Not only did the Rotary Club Of Kent use its influence to establish and promote this project, but individual Rotarians also made liberal contributions, both personal and financial, for the benefit of this worthy project in the community.

Another great  moment in our club’s history.

Jim Myers
