Guests Laing Kennedy introduced Kent State Athletic’s Brian Grubich. Brian is interested in membership. Asad Khan introduced his wife Beth Khan, viewing from home today. Announcements Carol Crimi had several Foundation announcements: - The Foundation approved at their December meeting $3,000 to help fund two more water projects in El Salvador and Nicaragua. When the projects are completed there may be a delegation trip for those interested in traveling to Central America to see the projects.
- Local teachers and authors of the book And Now You Know Too about the history of the black squirrel in Kent will be presenting a copy of the book to all the 3rd graders in Kent City Schools and St. Patrick’s School. The Foundation provided $2,700 to help with the project and Davey Tree is also a partner. A black squirrel basket, including the book, will be auctioned off at our club’s annual auction.
Tom Hatch shared that the Tap Talk originally scheduled for this evening at North Water Brewing has been postponed until next month. The featured speaker for that talk will be our own Mark Pennell. Roberta O’Keefe is asking for members to sign up to deliver the invocation. A sign-up sheet will be passed. Asad Khan encouraged everyone to keep attending meetings in Pierson Hall not only for the great lunches, but there are many great programs planned for March and April. Rachel Kerns shared that the district’s 4 Way Test Contest will be held on April 9 at Theodore Roosevelt High School. The planning committee still needs time keepers and judges for this event. See Rachel or Will Underwood if you are willing to volunteer. Kathy Myers reminded everyone that our club’s contest will be held on March 8. Andrew Popp is still in need of judges for this event. Please let him or Kathy know if you can be a judge that day. Dave Myers asked for volunteers to attend the upcoming district grants seminars. This is a requirement in order for our club to be eligible for grant money in the coming year. These are in-person meetings lasting about one hour. We need at least two people to attend. Dave also shared a reminder about the PETS (President-Elect Training) competition among five districts to raise money and/or collect blankets for foster care children. $10 donations are being accepted now by our club to help with this effort. Bring money next week. Kathy Myers announced that the district conference will be April 22-23 and encouraged as many club members as possible to attend since we are the home club for current district governor, Larry Lohman. Student of the Month – Theodore Roosevelt High School Dennis Love introduced student Fatou M’Baye who was joined by her proud parents Babacar M’Baye and Eriko Tanaka, both professors at Kent State. In addition to being a straight A student, Fatou plays tennis, is part of Riders for Social Justice, and was a Freshmen mentor. Program Today’s program featured our own Rotarians Paul Organ and Asad Khan as they each shared their international travel and volunteer experiences with the club. Paul Organ described mission and volunteer trips in which he was fortunate to participate in Mexico, Kenya, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Thailand, Korea, and Romania. Some of these trips were with an organization called World Vision. Paul first began traveling outside the US in 1977 and feels blessed to have had these experiences as they help him to appreciate everything we have in the US and as US citizens. Asad Khan presented a photo diary of his travels throughout the world. He estimates that he has visited 50 countries. Photos he shared were taken in Pakistan, Libya, UK, Barcelona, Mexico City, Germany, Korea, Canada, France, Scotland, Japan and China. He finished the presentation by including pictures of signs that he has encountered while traveling. Oddly, many of the signs he photographed were about urinals and toilets in other countries which gave the club a good laugh. Today’s responder to the program was Curt Stumpf. President Kathy led a reciting of the 4 Way Test to close the meeting. Respectfully submitted, Stacey Richardson
