Myers’ Musings – November 30, 2021

Member picture

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends.  As I mentioned in my program last Tuesday, we all have so much for which to be grateful!  After Thursday, one of the things for which I am grateful is stretchy pants. smiley

The Rotary Holiday Party will be this Friday, December 3rd.  I hope everyone who wanted to sign up did.  I’m not sure if there is any opportunity to join, as the reservations were due last week…. But if you didn’t sign up and wish you did, please check with Rebekah Wright Kulis.  If you’re like me and signed up, but haven’t yet paid, you can bring a check (made payable to Rotary Club of Kent, Ohio) to the meeting on Tuesday.  We expect to have our Venmo account set up this week, so that will be an option soon.

The Kent Rotarian of the Year will be announced on Saturday as well as several other recognitions.  I am quite excited to make these announcements.

High Five to Curt Stumpf and Dave Myers!!!  The Story Walk project that our club is sponsoring is under way in Kent.  Yesterday (Saturday) we hosted the launch at the Kent Stage. The story for this event is Dragon’s Merry Christmas by Dav Pilkey. We had cookies (Very cute dragon cookies shaped like Dragon from the story), free books, maps for the month long event and more.  We had three book readings and the first two had last minute subs.  The first reader was to be “Miss Shelly” from the Kent Library, but due to work conflicts for Shelly, was Curt.  (Great job, Dr. Stumpf!)  The second reader was to have been Anita Herington, but due to illness (hope you’re feeling better, Anita!), was changed to me.  It gave me the opportunity to channel my inner Miss Shelley, and what could be bad about that?  I am grateful that our club took advantage of an opportunity to interact with literacy and Main Street Kent!  Great work, everyone!

The board is working on the nominations for officers and board members for next year.  More info will be coming soon.

Planning ahead – we will not have meetings on Tuesday, December 21 or December 28th

Let’s Serve to Change Lives!

With gratitude,

Kathy

Rotareminder for November 23, 2021

Rotareminder   November 23, 2021

President Kathy Myers called the meeting to order, reviewing the agenda for the day.
David Dix opened the meeting with the patriotic song, which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, led by President Kathy. The invocation was led by Lauren Tallion. Continuing our club tradition and honoring Thanksgiving Week, the membership sang Come, Ye Thankful People, Come.

Announcements
President Kathy announced she was pleased to see Hal Loughry, Ernie Mastroianni, Shawn Gordon, Steve Belli, and Bill Arthur present at an in-person meeting, noting she has been making phone calls to members encouraging their attendance at in-person Tuesday meetings.

Curt Stumpf reminded the club that The Story Walk, supporting Small Business Saturday, will be this coming Saturday, from 10:00 to 2:00PM, and is a project sponsored by our Club. Pages of a story, Dragon’s Merry Christmas, are posted in various store front windows. Young people will go from store to store reading the pages. There will be a donation box at each place for coats. Cookies and story recitation will be provided the end. Our own Anita Herington will be a reader at the Kent Stage at 12:00PM.

Rebecka Wright-Kulis reminded the membership that Jingle & Mingle is on Friday December 3, at The Overlook. She indicated it is very casual and starts at 6:00PM but encouraged everyone not to be fashionably late! The program starts at 6:45PM. The Rotarian of the Year will be announced!

Rachel Kerns reminded everyone that our Club is doing our Toy Drive. We did so well last year, we have expanded the drive to serve the Salvation Army and Coleman, as well as Kent Social Services. She asked members to reach out to her if they have any questions.

Bill Childers presented the dates and a sign-up sheet for the Salvation Army Bell Ringing. They are Saturday December 4, Wednesday December 8, Saturday December 11, and Thursday December 16 at Acme on East Main in Kent. Signup or contact Bill if interested.

Happy Bucks
Noting it was Thanksgiving Week, President Kathy thought it would be a good time to give members the opportunity to donate Happy Bucks. Rachel Kerns, Dr. Chris Martin, Dr. Randy Smith, Asad Khan, Chas Madonio, Larry Lohman, Steve Belli, Amanda Senn, and Kathy Myers all contributed.

Program
President Kathy Myers presented herself as the speaker today with little fanfare, noting most everyone knew all about her. Her topic for the program was Attitude of Gratitude and she utilized a series of slides to organize her presentation into various parts.

The introduction included an overview of research studies she had reviewed, listing the definition and the underlying benefits derived from gratitude:
-it may be broadly defined as the appreciation of what is valuable and meaningful to
 ourselves.
-it makes you happier.
-it helps you sleep better
-it improves you physical and mental health.
-it can help our financial life.
-it improves our work life

This set the stage for a participatory exercise by the members of the club in the form of a Gratitude Quiz. Using booklets on the tables, they were given a list of statements and asked to individually rank them 1 thru 7: 1 STRONGLY DISAGREE, 2 DISAGREE, 3 SLIGHTLY DISAGREE, 4 NEUTRAL, 5 SLIGHTLY AGREE, 6 AGREE, 7 STRONGLY AGREE.

The statements were:
  • I have so much in life for which to be thankful.
  • If I had to list everything, I feel thankful for, it would be a long list.
  • When I look at the world, I don’t see much to be grateful for.
  • I am grateful for a wide variety of people.
  • As I get older, I find myself more able to appreciate the people, events, and situations that have been part of my life journey.
  • Long amounts of time can go by before I feel grateful to something or someone.
Club members were directed to add up their scores for items A, B, D, & E. They were directed to invert their scores for items C & F (1 becomes 7, 2 becomes 6, etc.), add them to the total. President Kathy speculated, based on our club membership being a “happy group,” most of us scored between 35 and 42, demonstrating a high degree of gratitude and appreciation in our lives. She indicated that, based on research, there are various ways to impact gratitude.

In the last part of her presentation, President Kathy explored these practical, researched ways, by posing the question “How Can We Cultivate Gratitude?”

Write a Thank You note
She noted that a thank you note becomes a treasure and provided note cards, and envelopes the members could take home and utilize for this activity.

Thank someone mentally
Simply find ways to do this, such as while driving, etc.

Keep a Gratitude Journal
List each day a pre-selected number of items you are thankful for that day. Include items you may be thankful that don’t happen.

Count our Blessings
Take a moment to think about all the things that went right and how moments of gratitude make you feel. Especially those moments of giving.

Prayer
Even if not religious, a small prayer of gratitude.

Meditate
Practice mindful meditation, focusing on the present without judgement, being grateful for the simple things of nature, etc.

Kathy summed up her presentation by reminding us that as we move forward this Thanksgiving week, take the booklet with us. Start writing down those things we are thankful for. Take the note cards and write a thank you note to someone you care for. Let them know how much you appreciate them. Citing author Lisa Ryan, “If you tell someone, you leave a memory. If you write it down and give it them, you have given them a treasure”, Kathy encouraged us all to follow through in this exercise. She encouraged us to share with someone why you are grateful for them this week and ending her presentation.

Asad Khan prefaced a question by thanking Kathy and asked what her inspiration for the program was. She indicated that her happiness is linked to maintaining an “attitude of gratitude” and keeping things in perspective, especially during this week of preparing for the Thanksgiving celebration.

Responder
The response was provided by Nelson Burns. He Thanked President Kathy for her presentation, noting that her husband Tom and son David were happy they did not have to respond. He noted that her message reminded him of the idea that in giving gratitude, you get it back twofold! He pointed out that we all can apply the ideas she presented over this Thanksgiving holiday.

The meeting ended as President Kathy led us in the recitation of The Rotary 4-Way Test.
