Why We Need Friends
Our program chair for September, Mary Beth Harper, told us the programs in September would focus on friendships: why we need friends, how we make friends, how we keep friends, etc. She gave each of us handout that referred to a book called, “The Good Life – Lessons from the world’s longest scientific study of happiness, creating a more meaningful and satisfying life.” The book describes an 85 year-long study of men, their spouses, and families. The research concluded that good relationships keep us healthier and happier. Mary Beth described friendship opportunities that have occurred in her life because of Rotary. The Kent Rotary Book Club, she said, helped her get to know Rotarians participating. She said that she and Carol Crimi have become good friends and have gone three times to Italy together. She challenged Rotarians to discuss friendship at the tables where we were sitting with these prompts: Where did you meet most of your friends? Tell us about your longest-term friendship and why you have remained friends; Identify your newest friend and explain how you met; Say why we all need friends. Responders talked about theie table conversations.
Responder: Carol Crimi responded joining Mary Beth in advocating for the importance of friendships.
The meeting ended with reciting the Four Way Test.
