President’s ramblings for week of February 2
We kicked off February “Heart Month” with a program from The American Heart Association’s Tracy Behnke. Her reminder to be vigilant to heart health during these sequestered months was timely. We will hear from a familiar voice when Nate Watson tells us of the local Jaycees happenings this coming week.

As we heard at this week’s meeting there are multiple opportunities to be of service to our community currently. Two involve our club’s long standing drive to promote literacy. We need volunteers to “get the word out” about The Imagination Library, a joint venture with our club, Kent Free Library and Portage County United Way. It can provide an age appropriate book monthly to children from birth to 5 years of age. Contact Curt Stumpf or Stacey Richardson to volunteer. Next is an opportunity to volunteer to record a reading of a children’s story for use during our upcoming literacy week with Kent School’s. Contact Kelly Tremaine or Shawn Gordon to volunteer. Also, we need volunteers for the Lord’s Lunch, a program to help feed the community on February 20, contact Carol Crimi. Finally, Rachel Kerns is looking for online judges for the district 4 Way Speech Contest. Should be something for everybody to get involved with in a safe yet extremely beneficial project.

Announcements:

Invocation:  Christie Anderson read parts of Amanda Gorman’s poem from President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

Community Meal:  Carol Crimi needs volunteers to help serve a community meal on Saturday, February 20, at the Faith Lutheran Church.  Contact her if you can help dish up dinners, deliver to curbside or prepare desserts.

4-way Speech Contest:  About 15 volunteer judges are needed to spend one hour on Zoom judging speeches.  Date is Saturday, April 10.  Contact Rachel Kerns or Will Underwood if you can help.

Online all year:  President Randy Smith announced that online meetings will continue until the end of June (his entire Rotary presidency).

Grants:  Shawn Gordon announced that members are asked to volunteer to attend a Grants Management Seminar on Zoom either February 9 or 26.  We need members to attend this training, so our club can apply for a district grant on May 15.  Contact Shawn for information.

Literacy videos:  New member Kelly Tremaine is working with Shawn Gordon to produce videos of members reading books by Dr. Seuss for distribution to area schools.  If you are interested in filming your own video, contact one of them.  This will take place instead of our usual in-person reading events.

Welcome new member Andrew PoppAndrew Popp, an attorney with Weisenburger Law in Ravenna, was inducted as a new member.  Andrew specializes in probate issues and elder law.  He lives in Boardman with his family.

Club history:  Jim Myers talked about the death of William Walls, who started the Rotary Club of Kent.

Stanton Middle School Student of the Month:  Sloane Crookston
Sloane Crookston is a member of the volleyball team and Student Council and holds a 3.95 GPA.  She also plays softball and is interested in volunteering in the community.

Program:  Tracy Behnke, Executive Director of the Northeast Ohio/Western Pennsylvania American Heart Association.  Tracy, who has served as Director since 2018, was introduced by Rotarian Sandee Reid, who is the Chair Elect of the group.

Tracy talked about National Heart Month and many of the activities planned, including “Wear Red” on Friday, February 5 to raise awareness.  Heart disease is the Number 1 killer of Americans.  She reviewed the signs of a heart attack and the need for prevention. Here is her slide presentation.

Responder was Amanda Senn.

Kent Rotary History Moment for Feb 2, 2021
Kent Rotarians were shocked and saddened by the announcement of the death of  William Walls, Superintendent Of Kent Public Schools and the founder of Rotary in Kent, due to an automobile accident while on his way to Columbus August 14, 1937. Funeral services were held at Methodist Episcopal Church in Kent with burial in Steubenville Ohio.

A Memorial service in honor of Bill Walls was held by Kent Rotary at their luncheon meeting on Tuesday, September 28 . Following the service a committee of Rotarians proceeded to Roosevelt High School where they hung  a life-size picture of Walls in the main corridors of the High School.

William Walls familiarly known to all Rotarians as “Bill “ was the organizer and first president of Kent Rotary.  His administration laid the firm foundation upon which the structure of Rotary in Kent was built. The Rotary Code Of Ethics to him was not for display;  it was taken with him and practically applied in his various fields of endeavor.
He was a living example of “Service Above Self”.

Another moment in our history.

Jim Myers
