4-way Speech Contest: About 15 volunteer judges are needed to spend one hour on Zoom judging speeches. Date is Saturday, April 10. Contact Rachel Kerns or Will Underwood if you can help. Online all year: President Randy Smith announced that online meetings will continue until the end of June (his entire Rotary presidency). Grants: Shawn Gordon announced that members are asked to volunteer to attend a Grants Management Seminar on Zoom either February 9 or 26. We need members to attend this training, so our club can apply for a district grant on May 15. Contact Shawn for information. Literacy videos: New member Kelly Tremaine is working with Shawn Gordon to produce videos of members reading books by Dr. Seuss for distribution to area schools. If you are interested in filming your own video, contact one of them. This will take place instead of our usual in-person reading events. Welcome new member Andrew Popp: Andrew Popp, an attorney with Weisenburger Law in Ravenna, was inducted as a new member. Andrew specializes in probate issues and elder law. He lives in Boardman with his family. Club history: Jim Myers talked about the death of William Walls, who started the Rotary Club of Kent. Stanton Middle School Student of the Month: Sloane Crookston Sloane Crookston is a member of the volleyball team and Student Council and holds a 3.95 GPA. She also plays softball and is interested in volunteering in the community. Program: Tracy Behnke, Executive Director of the Northeast Ohio/Western Pennsylvania American Heart Association. Tracy, who has served as Director since 2018, was introduced by Rotarian Sandee Reid, who is the Chair Elect of the group. Tracy talked about National Heart Month and many of the activities planned, including “Wear Red” on Friday, February 5 to raise awareness. Heart disease is the Number 1 killer of Americans.
