Myers’ Musings – August 24, 2021

Member picture

We will be meeting at Stanton Middle School this week!

If you haven’t signed up for lunch yet, here’s the link.   https://www.eventbrite.com/e/rotary-lunch-8242021-tickets-167866965613 This week we will have Little City Grill providing a Slider Buffet for our club.  Cost is $10 each.  Thanks Amanda Senn for organizing!

Thanks to everyone who showed up for our Kent Rotary 100th Anniversary Photo!  When is started pouring minutes prior to our photo shoot, I know more than a few of us were concerned.  We must be living right, as the rain stopped just in time for our photo.  While we had an overcast sky, it provided softer light and no glare.  It made it easier to keep our eyes open.  There was one photo of the group that was better than the rest.  Stay tuned.

Last Tuesday’s program was wonderful.  David Hassler from the Wick Poetry Center made a terrific presentation. He offered to have a poetry workshop for members of our club who might be interested.  Let me know.

Our shirt samples are in.  I will bring them to the next couple of meetings along with a signup sheet.

Remember to invite friends and colleagues to be your guest at our meetings.  We want to share our great club and all we do for the Kent community and beyond.

Let’s Serve to Change Lives!

With gratitude,

Kathy

Program

David Hassler – KSU – Director of Wick Poetry Center – “Traveling Stanzas”

David Hassler, Ohio Poet of the year on ’06 and author of at least nine books related to poetry, is the director of the Wick Poetry Center on the campus of KSU.  His passion for poetry has led him on a mission to introduce poetry into the lives of many across the county.

His primary mission is to not only help develop one’s interest in poetry, but to use poetry as an integration tool to foster understanding that can assuage concerns that may arise from the unique circumstances people experience.

Some examples of the numerous projects David has been responsible for creating: poetry posters on downtown utility boxes by school-age students; poetry writing workshops in collaboration with the International Institute of Akron; outreach programs to places like rural areas or local hospitals, and a developing idea of a mobile unit that can take poetry to places as a way to provide others the opportunity to expand themselves through verse.

Today’s responder to the program was David McKee.

Respectfully submitted,
Brian K Bialik

Kent Rotary History Moments for August 17, 2021
Kent State sociology professor Jim Laing was our president during the years 1946 and 47.  He was determined to make it the best of all years. This was the year after the big war. It was the year to redo; it was the year to set the world on a safe and sturdy foundation; it was the year to write our wrongs. We wanted to build not to destroy.

Dr. George Bowman, then president of Kent State University, was readying the institution for the postwar boom. Student enrollment was almost 5000 as the university began a steady climb to more than 20,000 in 1970.

Bill Taylor, journalism professor at KSU headed a drive to secure rooms for the increasing number of KSU students. Burt Spellman was honored by the Boy Scouts of America for his continuing leadership.  Rol Weingart, Streetsboro farmer, was telling service clubs of the modernization of farm production.

An inspirational member of Kent Rotary was John Paulfi who had immigrated to the United States in 1907. A former cavalry officer in the Hungarian army,  Palfi found the United States to be the land of his dreams. He settled here, raised a family and was affectionately known for his ownership of motion picture theaters in northern Ohio.

Other interesting programs and speakers included Colorful Bill Veeck of the Cleveland Indians, and later in the year, Tris Speaker.  Lou Fageol, then president of Twin Coach Motor Co., told Rotarians of his racing experiences at the Indianapolis 500.

At years end the president's gavel was handed to Kent Schools Superintendent, Howard Smith.

Walt Strawman’s obituary
Walt Strawman’s obituary was printed only in the Akron Beacon Journal one day and not in the R-C.  With no services or calling hours, I wondered if we could or should include a link to Walt's obituary in the eBulletin.  Walt was a devoted Rotarian of 51 years, who always helped with the Shoebox project among many others.  Thanks, Mary Beth Harper
