President’s ramblings for week of October 13
Another informative program in our month-long series about liquid libations this week. Tim Sahr from Kent’s Cheesemonger discussed wine and cheese pairings with several lucky members participating in a tasting. We next hear about Bourbon and other spirits from Josh Daily and Amy Mesh of the Columbus based distillery Middle West Distillery.

We welcome Amanda Senn to the Rotary board as she has agreed to take over the membership committee. You should have received a proposal for a bylaw change. A new Ways and Means committee, which was introduced as an ad hoc committee by then past president Roger Sidoti, is now proposed as an ongoing entity. A board position for the director of this committee is also outlined. The board has decided to celebrate this upcoming holiday season with a virtual holiday celebration with details up coming. In the mean time however it’s time to start proposing nominees for Rotarian of the Year. Finally don’t forget Friday, October 24 is World Polio Day and we will be asking members as well as the community to donate to Rotaries efforts to eradicate this disease forever.

Kent Rotary History Moment Oct 13, 2020

Another reminder of our 100 year history.

Tuesday, November 5, 1929 was election day for the selection of city officials.  For the mayors office, the electors had a choice of two Rotarians. The incumbent was Norman Beal, Republican who was opposed by Roy Smith, Democrat. The Rotary club could celebrate either way the election went. Election returns show that Roy Smith was elected mayor for the succeeding two years. At the Rotary meeting of December 31 the retiring mayor administer the oath of office to his successor.

The speaker that followed that day was Larry Wooddell, Game Commissioner of Portage Country who talked to Rotarians on game propagation and conservation. It’s interesting to note that Larry Wooddell was one of the gentleman who brought the famous black squirrels from Canada to  inhabit our campus our community and the surrounding area.
Later that Rotary year, in the Spring Of 1930, our club sponsored the organization and chartering for the Rotary Club Of Hudson.

Speaker
Member Curt Stumpf introduced our speaker, Tim Sahr co-owner of the Kent Cheesemonger who is here to present his views on the art of wine and cheese pairing.

Sahr, a Hudson native and civil engineer by education, made a career shift into the wine and cheese business with his spouse and fellow rotarian, Michelle.

The past two years have been unusual – sales for wine and cheese product grew meaningfully in Fy’19.  In 2020, just as company sales were continuing to trend upward, COVID-19 hit which forced their business to develop different strategies on how to sell their products.

Specifically, Kent Cheesemonger (KC), streamlined the ordering process with a more robust online service and added delivery to a broad radius.  Much to their delight, new and current customers responded favorably.  It may be reasonable to infer that having to be indoors may have heightened the need for people to indulge in wine and cheese consumption, or perhaps it is because that cheese has been described as a natural comfort food since it contains tyrosine which helps the body create dopamine, which is a good segue  into the topic of today’s talk “the Art of Wine and Cheese Pairing”.

Suggestions for putting one in the proper mood…
Light wine with goat cheese or Brie

As one progresses beyond the initial cleansing exercise…
Cabernet Sauvignon with a sharp cheddar or an alpine cheese with a lighter red.

And to finish off the evening
A select port wine combined with a heavy blue cheese.  Sparkling wines (which are dry) may be paired with various triple cream bries.

Kathy Myers provided the club’s response.

Respectfully submitted,
Brian K Bialik
