President’s ramblings for week of November 17
I was struck, as I’m sure were many of you, how this week’s meeting brought us together across continents, time zones, cultures and ethnicities. During these unusual times it’s important to stop and reflect how we can still find positives among the negative chaos. This coming week we will perhaps geta glimpse at what we can look forward to at KSU’s Blossom program this summer.

Todd Kamenash and his committee are putting together a great Holiday event we can all enjoy virtually and at the same time aid several worthy community charities. It is going to be a fun and entertaining evening with opportunities to connect with fellow Rotarians! We are hoping that members will reach out to those we haven’t seen recently and facilitate their participation in this event.

Don’t forget to support Rotary’s seasonal toy drive, once again, spearheaded  by Rachel Kern’s. Toys or gift cards can be dropped off at Habitat’s Restore or checks, written to Kent Rotary Club, sent to PO Box 6, designated for the toy drive.

Program:
November program chair Tom Hatch introduced Abdoulaye Fall, who is working at the Read Center for International and Intercultural Education at Kent State University while he completes his doctorate.  Abdoulaye assembled a group of former participants in the International Leaders in Education Program, a U.S. State Department program that brought talented high school teachers from around the world to the U.S. to improve their skills in technology and teaching.  Kent State University was chosen as one of four sites for the program, which was cancelled during the first year of the Trump Administration.

Abdoulaye, who is from Senegal, introduced Dr. Amanda Johnson-Toala, who is the new director of the Read Center.  Other ILEP scholars who joined us from around the world, included Arvin Lou Abbaday Onez, Philippines; Dewi Susilawati, Indonesia; and Amoni Kittoke, Uganda.  Malek Alemdar, Turkey, completed an abbreviated stay earlier this year as a Fulbright Scholar.  Each shared their memorable experiences in the Kent community and the knowledge they brought back to their home countries.  A number of club members served as host families for the ILEP students, including Janet and David Dix and Karen and Doug Fuller.   Member T.N. Bhargava and his wife Christine also helped arrange to host the ILEP students at Rotary lunches over the years.

Responder was David Dix

Rotary History Moment Nov 17, 2020

Another reminder of our 100 year history.

Last week I mentioned the community garden project  started on 10 acres of the Longcoy farm. It’s great success as a Kent Rotary project can be summed up by the following statistics: The garden had yielded 250 bushels of tomatoes, 400 bushels of potatoes, 4000 heads of cabbage, and a goodly number of small vegetables in corresponding qualities. In the final statement chairman John Salter said that the greatest benefits derived from the garden were, first, it enabled the unemployed to help themselves; secondly, it gave them something to do, thereby keeping their minds from their troubles; thirdly, it created a feeling of goodwill and better understanding in the community. What a great project our club performed for our community!

Another moment in our club’s history.
